It’s been awhile.

Product Shooting
This shoot was for a catalog being distributed in US market for assorted baskets.
There was minimal fuss in a hotel room with the chefs taking care of the food. Bringing in 2 duffel bags worth of assorted lighting gear was a bit too much. After some test shots with a combo of ambient room lighting and a fully open window only 2 580 EX II Speedlights were used. The shoot was done in under 8 hours with 2 cameras tethered to a Mac. The images were used for both print and website usage.

The Take Out Box
White is not really all white. White is a mix of creams, greys, whites and yellows. The challenge was to shoot a white take out box against a white background. A few head butting sessions later, concept of using many take out boxes as background became a reality. Providing perspective and a harmonious texture to the subject. Through trial and error the Canon Speedlights had the right formula to isolate the single box as hero and background that blends in.
Captured with the Canon EOS 7D and EF 24-70mm with 2 speedlights and shoot through umbrellas.

Product Shoot For Yellow Pages Ad
These groupies were shot within a 3 day period. No composites of vaious frames here. All items were gingerly laid out-frustrating at times on a large set piece covered in white. As much as possible the shots were planned without any serious Photoshopping in post. 99% of the time, setting up a shot always takes longer.
Shot with 3-4 Canon Speedlites on steroids and as usual with RAW file processed to tiff then jpeg. (as matter of fact, my next post will be about why YOU should always shoot in RAW-stay tuned).
It’s just nice to see work printed in all it’s glory even if it’s hobbit-sized…

Week-Ender #76
From a recent photo shoot with a drill. The camera just loves red!

Simple Products-Complex Lighting
Dial-a-photographer….tap, tap, tap-piddie, tap… ringing… hello, yup, sure…. uh-ha… no prob… yeah, don’t worry it’ll be cheap. Oh, yeah just a few bottles of watchamacallit.. yeah, yup, sure ok… will wait for the products to arrive and get back to you, thanks. *click*- Well, actually it wasn’t a click just the button on the mobile that ends the call.
Fast forward when the package arrives and low and behold such cute little bottles of sprays. Oh, both for men and women. Looking and holding the bottles and wiping it down to get them all sparkly clean for the shoot. Uh, wait… sparkly?! Looks at labels as close as possible to the human eye that’s got -50 astigmatism. Oh, goodness! All the labels have a metalized coating on them. This will make this mundane product shot with a few strobes so much more fun! Fun as in so much more set up time is needed to not have any glare on the bottles. You know, metallic labels reflect the hell out of the light. Light just has that unique property of showing itself off everything shiny.
A few days of shooting and post processing later, the products were shot and roaring to be back to their owners. Even with Photoshop cleaning up glare was a hellish chore-shoot for minimum post work, always. Captured with Canon EOS 7D+EF 24-70 f/2.8+2 580 EX II Speedlites+1 430 EX II Speedlite and a whole bunch-o light modifiers. Shooting at an angle helps to reduce reflection.

ELEGANTLY SIMPLE
The design was surprisingly elegant and minimalist.
Another shoot with Vanilla Kitchen last week had a custom themed Angelina Ballerina birthday cupcakes and cakes. The clover/flower accents brought out the cake while the chocolate cupcakes framed the detailed toppings perfectly.
Caught a little torch action with another set of cupcakes as well (second to the bottom photo). The award-winning smoke still steaming from just torched icing shot-what did I win? A cupcake…

Kelsey’s Chocolates
Once upon an afternoon, on location and surrounded by chocolates, we did a simple lighting set up. Photographed the small wonders the entire afternoon and finished just short of 7pm. Not only did we enjoy the shoot but came away with goodies from Kelsey’s Chocolates. Thereby making our wives happy for our profession.

Kelsey’s Chocolates have a premium line of chocolate truffles at very affordable prices. Hand made from quality Belgian dark chocolates.
Dark chocolates are chock full of antioxidants called flavonoids that protect us from heart disease caused by free radicals. That’s a lot of scientific words for such a sweet little treat. All that means is have dark chocolates regularly to stay alive longer-no harm, no foul and very enjoyable. Besides, I heard somewhere that chocolates are an aphrodisiac.
Kelsey’s Chocolates, order some and try for yourselves.
Christmas is just around the corner. We offer decadent, hand-made, premium chocolate truffles, available in white and dark. Order now!!! For inquiries, please call Karen@975 6737 or 0917 848 0104 (Philippines Only)
KC has more products up their sleeves and watch out for more postings soon.
